What is a Snake game mode?

A Snake game mode is a rule you switch on before a round, such as bricks that drop as you eat or edges that wrap around. Every mode here works with the same board sizes and the same three speeds.

To change the mode, open Settings with the gear button in the game header, tap a tile in the Mode row and press Play. On a mode's own page the board opens with that mode already on.

Each mode keeps its own Best score in your browser, saved for every combination of mode, speed, board size and number of fruits.

In every mode except Peaceful, a crash ends the round. A round also ends when you fill the board or reach the Goal you set in Settings.

What Wall, Light and Yin Yang look like

Board in Wall mode with a long blue snake, a red apple in the bottom-left corner and nine green brick tiles scattered across the board; the score reads 9.
Wall mode after nine fruit: nine bricks, one per fruit eaten.
Board in Light mode: almost all of it is black, with a lit circle around the snake's head at the top left and a red apple glowing in the lower left. The whole blue snake stays visible across the top; the score reads 4.
Light mode after four fruit: the snake and the frame stay bright, but the board is lit only around the head and around a fruit that has just appeared.
Board in Yin Yang mode with a blue snake on the right, an orange snake of the same length on the left in the mirrored position, and one red apple at the top.
Yin Yang mode: the orange snake is the blue one's reflection through the middle of the board. Fruit eaten by either snake counts.

Snake game modes FAQ

How many Snake game modes are there?

There are 22. Classic is the plain game, and the other 21 each change a rule, such as Wall, Borderless, Portal, Poison and Minesweeper.

How do I change the Snake game mode?

Open Settings with the gear button in the game header, tap a tile in the Mode row and press Play. Settings is already open before the first round and after a crash.

Which Snake mode should I try first?

Start with Classic, then pick a mode that changes one thing: Borderless removes the edge crash, Wall adds bricks and Portal pairs the fruit. Peaceful lets you recover from a crash: the snake stops until you turn, and you end the round yourself.

Does each Snake mode have its own best score?

Yes. The Best score is saved in this browser for each combination of mode, speed, board size and number of fruits.

Can I play Snake modes on a phone?

Yes. Steer with a swipe, or turn on the D-pad in Settings. On a keyboard use the arrow keys or WASD.

Are the Snake game modes free?

Yes. All of them are free to play in your browser. They need no account and nothing to install.
